Lapin - Cajun Creole Songs for Children |
| |
Lapin,
Lapin is the new CD by the Magnolia Sisters, Louisiana’s premier
all-women’s Cajun band. The CD contains over 30 authentic historic
Cajun and Creole children’s songs, lullabies, and dances. The performances
on Lapin Lapin are true to the roots of the music, showing influences
from calypso, old-time stringband, Carribean, New Orleans Creole,
and straight up Cajun dancehall styles.

This
is fresh and highly enjoyable Cajun music that offers more than
a few surprises. The Magnolia Sisters may be one of the only all-woman
Cajun bands, but what distinguishes them most may be their repertoire,
which includes not only seldom-heard dance tunes from Cajun and
Creole tradition, but beautifully-sung ballads that reveal a side
of Cajun music not often heard these days. Ann Savoy, Jane Vidrine,
Anya Schoenegge and Lisa Trahan Reed represent the very best that
modern Cajun music has to offer.

The
Magnolia Sisters offer a refreshing perspective on Cajun music,
not only because they may be the genre's only all-woman band, but
in their beautiful harmonies and rediscovery of little-known traditional
repertoire. Ann Savoy, Jane Vidrine, Tina Pilione, Christine Balfa
and Lisa Trahan Reed are strong acoustic instrumentalists who have
created an album of beauty and great strength, balancing rollicking
dance music with haunting and ancient ballads. Name recognition
is strong in this band: Ann Savoy is a member of the Savoy-Doucet
Band (with her husband Marc Savoy and BeauSoleil leader Michael
Doucet) and Christine Balfa leads Balfa Toujours.
