Anya Burgess
Guitar - Fiddle - Vocals
Anya
has been playing traditional music on guitar and fiddle for many
years. She began performing folk and traditional songs in a female
duo in college and the two were invited to spend a summer playing
in a pub in Dingle, Ireland.
Her
interest in old-time fiddle music and square dancing was cultivated
while in the Appalachian mountains at the John
C. Campbell Folk School. A few years in Bloomington, Indiana
intensified this interest as she played guitar with an old-time
string band there (The Monks) and performed school shows for elementary
students introducing them to traditional music and dance.
While
at Indiana University, she also pursued the studies of folklore
and music and completed a program in violin making and repair work.
Several summers she spent in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia working under
the guidance of a violin maker there and playing tunes with friends.
She
currently lives in South Louisiana with her husband Richard and new baby Reuben, and besides building violins keeps busy with violin repair work when she isn't playing music with The Magnolia
Sisters or Bonsoir Catin.
